What is a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check?

A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is a record of an individual's convictions, cautions, reprimands and warnings which can also include intelligence held by the UK Police that relates to that individual and their suitability for a position working with children and/or vulnerable adults.

 

Why do I need a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check?

A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is normally carried out as part of recruitment and vetting procedures and requires the individual's permission.

What involvement will Shropshire Council have in the application process?

As a Registered Body (and one acting as an Umbrella Body), Shropshire Council will ensure that a completed application is submitted correctly and that the information contained within it is confirmed through comparison with original documents such as a passport, driving licence or any other ID listed by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) as being an acceptable form of ID. 

 

What happens with my personal information once the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate is issued?

As a Registered Body (and one acting as an Umbrella Body), Shropshire Council are legally bound to securely hold information and are unable to reveal any information gained by the process or shown on the Disclosure and Barring (DBS) disclosure.  Once the Disclosure and Barring (DBS) certificate has been seen, online information will be archived and detroyed where appropriate as outlined in our Privacy Notice.
